Review of Hugo (2012) by Joanna W — 24 Mar 2013
Whilst visually amazing and a genuine work of craft, the movie itself takes a long time to get where it's going and ends up being a tribute to early filmmaker and trick photography pioneer Georges Melies.
Supposedly this is based on a children's book, but the content seems too adult for young children and the style and some of the comedy relief is too childish for adults. Still, it's beautiful to look at and encapsulates the feel of a movie the entire family could sit round to watch on a Christmas evening, it's nowhere near Martin Scorsese's best work and the fact this won 5 Oscars was rather generous. Good, albeit very overhyped.
