Review of Hugo (2012) by Ian E — 26 Apr 2013
Hugo was quite disappointing. Perhaps knowing about the Oscar buzz and the higher expectations that come with going to see a Scorsese film (although this has admittedly ebbed in recent years) left me hoping for more than feasible.
The premise was interesting (spoiler alert) - one of filmmaking's true originals - a maverick - played by the always welcome-on-screen Ben Kingsley - is relegated to running a toy shop at a busy train station.
The film is a good-looking one but the story is not very compelling and neither are the characters. It's a flat uninspired affair whose fabricated sense of romance and wonder seemed to work better on others than on me.
It's a nice effort but the film is not nearly as sweet or inspired as it pretends to be. It missed its mark. But like I said, it's good looking - if not claustrophobic (whose point is not lost on me) - but altogether an underwhelming experience.
