This film is a MAJOR departure from the typical Scorsese movie. Could be why it gets some negative audience reviews; it's not the type of work or subject material one would expect. View this film without preconceptions about what a "Scorsese" film should be or contain.
It's an excellent story, extremely well filmed and directed with equally excellent acting performances. Certainly deserving of the 11 Academy Award nominations, and the 5 it won (competing against "The Artist," another phenomenal and quite unique film nominated for 11 and winning 5).
The plot and screenplay have predictably "happy endings," but that's the norm for a PG rated story. It's proof that great Oscar-winning films are not required to have foul language, adult sexual themes and nudity, or graphic violence.
Normally a fan of films that do not shy away from solid MPAA R ratings, finding the G and PG films generally too sugar coated, this one is a pleasant surprise.
