Review of Hugo (2012) by Jorel D — 27 Feb 2014
It's films like Hugo that show Scorsese's got range, he can pull off gritty crime dramas and beautiful children's films. None of the performances lack, and some of them are great, most notably Asa Butterfield and Ben Kingsley who knock it out of the park.
But the star of this film is undoubtedly Martin Scorsese. This film is expertly shot and looks absolutely gorgeous- it really is a joy to indulge in. Some may say it's too long but it's paced well enough that it doesn't feel it- what it feels like is one giant love letter to the dawn of cinema, and I loved it.
4/5.
