This is definitely not your typical Martin Scorsese movie. I wish I had liked this more, but I had a hard time connecting with this boy's story. Maybe it's because it takes the movie a long time to get into what it wants to be about.

The early scenes are mostly Hugo trying to avoid being caught in a train station. He is not a saint - he is a thief as Papa Georges says, so it's hard to be overly sympathetic. Once it gets into the main plot about the advent of cinema and we get into Georges' backstory it gets better.

I was amused by the fact that Scorsese had a Hitchcockian cameo. And why is this set in Paris if no one is going to have a French accent?
