Review of Hugo (2011) by Josh C — 07 Apr 2013
It's amazing atmospheric and visually stunning, and it's done to the effect where it pulls you straight into the film and its story which is far from what you'd expect based purely on trailers.
The themes of older movies that the film pulls you into explain why Scorsese took this up to begin with: he felt a need to honor many of the older films that started the medium.
The film ended up as a fantasy-like children's film that visually and emotionally pulled you in as it progressed and ultimately the film was also a tribute to film as a whole, two things that managed to mix well together to create and gripping, stunning, and beautiful movie through and through.
It makes me wish more family films released today could capture this kind of spirit, and it's the most spirit I've seen in a family movie since films Pixar made like up and Toy Story 3.
