Review of Hugo (2011) by Edward H — 01 Jun 2013
I have waited some time to do this review. Hugo is one of those exceptional films that come along once in a lifetime. Martin Scorsese has done many films in his lifetime that were iconic pieces of film.
More films than I care to even mention here although I should. I know that Hugo was honored with several nominations and a couple wins at the Oscars. I don't believe that this was in the grand scheme of enough for this film.
Now don't get me wrong I'm not saying that this is the best movie ever created. I'm also not putting it, at least in my opinion on to high of a pedestal. It's just that while containing its originality.
This film was an homage to the creation and preservation of all films past, present and future. Intertwined within the story is a beautiful tale of a young man orphaned and alone in 1930's Paris trying to find a connection with his late father hidden in an automaton.
The other side of the story played so brilliantly by Sir Ben Kingsley. This is the tale of an older man destroyed by what he's lost and secretly wishing he could have it back and how these two stories intertwined.
The cast in this movie, big or small does a wonderful job of painting the vision that Scorsese wishes to convey. This movie should be seen in HD and you're doing yourself a great disservice by not seeing it as such.
I believe I would not be going too far by saying that this is art. As a cinephile this movie touched my very soul. I am not too ashamed to admit I had shed a few tears near the end. The imagery combined with the story just made for the perfect combination for a wonderful film.
I can't say you will have the same reaction or feel the same way I did. I will not try to impose my overwhelming praise for this film on you. If by chance you have not seen this film. You might find the same gem I did.
If by chance you do not what the hell is wrong with you, you soulless bastard! (Just kidding). Now, for all those folks who use Netflix or Amazon, or any one of the other streaming Internet movie watching sites.
Hugo is available on all of them, free to watch even in HD. So pop some popcorn, grab the kiddos, "if you have any, don't grab someone else's" and sit down for a fun family night.
