Review of Hugo (2011) by Alejandro C — 24 Oct 2013
Cinema at its absolute best. It's interesting that some of the very best films are about film. The director's passion shines through in every scene. The atmosphere is reminiscent of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - a sort of fantasy world - but reality breaks in at every level with bits of documentary, old silent clips in a multi-coloured many-layered patchwork - and then you realise, yes, reality, but not reality because ALL of it - savage first world war clips included - is all FILM anyway.
There were moments here which struck me as artistic perfection - only I wouldn't be able to define or explain either why or how.
