Review of Howl (2010) by William W — 30 Oct 2010
Not a great movie by any means, but not a waste of time either. There's nothing new here for anyone familiar with Ginsberg's work & life, & I'm not sure I get the part docudrama, part poetic rhapsody structure, but all the actors acquit themselves honorably, especially Franco as Ginsberg.
Who'd think the pretty boy actor would understand the geeky poet so well? Of course, the beating heart of the movie is the poem which is its namesake - still great & inspiring after all these years.
After the film climaxes with Franco possessed by Ginsberg reading the rousing "Footnote to Howl", you'll leave the theater ready to take on The World, stick it to The Man, & get all up in the grill of The Powers That Be.
