Review of Howl (2010) by Edward C — 18 Jan 2011
It pains me to dump on a film that so strives to be imaginative & original, that attempts to dramatize one of most striking & influential poems of the 20th century. But but but... Franco is all wrong for Ginsberg, bringing too much anachronistic irony to his performance of the young Ginsberg.
I know, the movies are the movies, but everyone is way too pretty. The animated sequences start out strong but then become so-so as the film advances. Instead of getting the whole poem we get repetition.
AND this is yet another film with gay content in which heterosexuality is displayed more erotically/graphically.
