Review of Howl (2010) by Katherine P — 17 Jun 2012
Franco stars as young poet Allen Ginsberg during the infamous public obscenity trial sparked by his poetry. The film involves Ginsberg recounting aspects of his life that inspired him to write such a poem and the testimonials of various people inside the courtroom.
As Franco, in a very committed performance, repeats the poem to the audience, we are shown animation that attempts to bring his poem to life. Unfortunately, this strange back and forth between the animation, the trial, and Franco's academic preaching make it quite the mish-mash.
Combined with an odd lack of emotional depth, Howl is moderately enjoyable and rather smug.
