Review of Howards End (1992) by Stephen M — 16 Mar 2008
A die hard fan of the author, I have read this novel more than once, listened to the book on tape version (read by Miss Emma Thompson) and seen this movie so many times that I can quote chapter and verse. It is one of the best film adaptations ever created and, truly, one of the Merchant Ivory teams best efforts. A well deserved Oscar for Emma Thompson, smoothly created screenplay by Ruth Prawer-Jabvala, the score by Richard Robbins enriches the values so deeply. I find no flaws whatsoever with the film and can recommend it to anyone who is even slightly intellectual or who loves the English language. I would NOT recommend it to people who tend toward more common films or action adventure films. It's probably going to be too heady for them. Most of my friends who like films like SCARY MOVIE or DATE MOVIE or MEET THE PARENTS didn't like this film.
For me, the proof is this: it's a long ass movie and I didn't notice. Not at all. And I can't sit still for more than 90 to 100 minutes at the movies unless it is great.
