Review of Howards End (1992) by Priscilla E — 25 Mar 2008
Wonderful, sparkling adaptation of an equally wonderful book, Beautifully filmed & acted (Hopkins lending pathos to the role of Mr. Wilcox & Bonham-Carter splendid as the passionately sympathetic & willful Helen) with perfect casting in the leads & beautiful costumes as can be expected in a Merchant & Ivory production.
Stays largely faithful to book & makes much of the symbolism in it, such as the bookcase falling on the ambitious & literary minded Leonard. I liked also how some of Forsters commentary was worked into the actual dialogue of the film.
