Review of Howards End (1992) by Carlo B — 22 May 2008
Oh the aqua net hairdo! after all the new decade just insenuates itself. Always a fan of both artistic forces here: the Merchant Ivory team and of course Mr. Forster. My favourite scene when Meg host a lunch, with her friends for Mrs. Wilcox, is to me looks suspiciously close to the Bloomsbury group where EM Forster belongs along with Lytton Strachey, Virginia Woolf, Duncan Grant, John Maynard Keynes and others. I expect Lady Orlando would walk in but, alas, that is another movie. Great performances by this thouroughly modern Meg by Emma Thompson. I just adore her, incredible range from a kooky Harry Potter prof to a suicidal writer in Stranger Than Fiction. What movie was I talking about again? Helena Bonham Carter is hilarious. Her line regarding Henry Wilcox, "Who is at this very moment celebrating his daughter's wedding. With the maximum of expense and ostentation. I could murder him!".
This movie is based on the book by the love child between Jane Austen and Oscar Wilde. Hey that makes a good premise for a movie... hmm.
