Review of Howards End (1992) by Mark J — 14 Feb 2009
A lavish adaptation of the E.M.Forster novel, this was the picture that sealed Merchant-Ivory's reputation. Deservedly earning Emma Thompson an oscar, there are also stand out performances from Anthony Hopkins and Helena Bonham-Carter.
It's a tale of subtle class struggle, the nature of philanthropy & family conflict all dreesed up in a beautiful Edwardian elegance which will be thoroughly appreciated by those who love costume drama.
Unfortunately the story is a little convoluted and some of the lesser characters come across as wooden & unengaging. Sam West as Leonard Bast never quite cuts the mustard & this makes his relationship with Helen Schlegel not quite convincing enough.
There's some clumsy editing in a few places, but these are monor criticisms for such a stylishly shot production.
