Review of Howards End (1992) by Cade L — 26 Mar 2009
I was thoroughly engrossed from begining to end, but was disappointed with the limpness of the ending. They must have spent a fortune dressing the sets and extras for some of these scenes--and no CGI of course.
It looks beautiful. The music was beautiful too. The story itself is wonderfully poetic in a number of places and the script is extremely well written--except for the scene where Henry and Meg reconcile through Henry's past.
The editing in that scene was unacceptable. If it was really that important to cut the scene's time down, they should have reshot it--the scene is way too important to mess up that badly. But I forgave it.
The acting was surprisingly off in a few of the early scenes but Hopkins and Thompson were lovely. I couldn't decide if I liked the characters or not--I seemed to flip back and forth--but maybe that was the point.
What impressed me the most were the superb sprawling period sets and custumes. Overall, I'm very glad I saw this and I kind of want to see it again.
