An inspired collection of parts and scenes that often seems fragmented, absent the seamless editing that we might expect from a Merchant Ivory production. Serious financial problems after shooting had wrapped may have put pressure on the final cut.
A vibrant Emma Thompson as Margaret Schlegel and set decorator Luciana Arrighi are the stars of this film. Indeed, both were rewarded with Academy Awards.
