Review of Howard the Duck (1986) by Robyn E — 07 Jul 2011
I didn't give this the lowest possible rating because there were some moments in the film that were so terrible it was amusing, and Lea Thompson had her own campy charm in the film (and is easy on the eyes to boot).
But make no mistake; this is a horrendous movie. The fact that for the time it was a pretty expensive film honestly makes it worse. It's one thing for a hack director and producer to make a horrendous film; it's quite another for George Lucas to approve a film with this budget and this much of a bastardization of the original concept for theater release.
The original comic that this is based on is an existential satire on comic conventions, and honestly has several moments of comic brilliance. All of that was thrown away for a kid-friendly romp with a duck from space laced with misplaced special effects and horrible character writing.
This film is an abortion in every sense of the word.
