Review of Howard the Duck (1986) by Jiana W — 15 Aug 2009
I don't really know how to rate a film like this. I could rate it based on the fact that as a child, I absolutely loved this movie. Or I could rate it based on its actual merit as a film. Well, based on merit I'd rate it at around 2 and a half stars. But since I loved this movie as a child, I'll rate it 3 stars ("okay" by my standards.).
The DVD jacket says this movie is one of the most talked about movies of all time. That may be true, but it's not in a good way. Howard The Duck is hailed as one of the worst movies ever made and one of the biggest box office bombs. I'm sure Lea Thompson, Tim Robbins, and Jeffrey Jones have tried to forget they ever contributed to this movie. But really, I thought they were all really good in it and, since I grew up on this, I can't really trash it. The dialogue is pretty funny, particularly when Jeffrey Jones is being taken over by the Dark Overlord ("She took my eggs.") The special FX, for its time, are pretty good. It's worth a watch just to say you've seen it, at least.
