Review of Howard the Duck (1986) by Robert W — 26 Nov 2009
To my surprise, it wasn't a totally disaster, in that a few of the jokes (the intentional ones that is) worked, and everything was appropriately daffy. Tim Robbins, in a small role had great zest and was so crazy it was funny, correctly attacking the material as a bizarre farce.
Now, the bad. The special effects (minus a creature near the end) are a mess, and Howard looks like he was assembled at a flea market. Lea Thompson added weight to every line, so anything out of her mouth was the most dire thing ever, making it laughable.
Jeffery Jones' voice during the transformation scenes is horrendous, and tonally, the movie is all over the place, never getting a rhythm. However, I have seen far worse things, and I had fun watching it, despite (or perhaps because of) the failures.
MST this thing until the cows come home!
