Review of Howard the Duck (1986) by Matt K — 17 May 2009
Completely terrible in every way. There is just no reason for this movie to exist at all. I mean when a movie is made there are literally hundreds of people involved in the process. Didn't any of them stop and say "This idea is a total and complete pile of shit" Seriously, a duck that gets sucked off his own planet and onto earth because of a random experiment gone wrong. Really, Really?!?!?!? That just sounds AWFUL! Add to that a hilarious romance subplot, not to mention the battle with an evil alien for no reason and this movie is just too bad to be believed. The ending is also completely ridiculous, with a "pop" tune called "Howard the Duck" that is effectively the theme-song of the film, except the characters are playing it . . . and a keytar is involved . . . yeah, a keytar . . . I know, I was shocked too! That said, it is ridiculously fun to watch and just be amazed at the awfulness, and I'm glad that I went to the trouble of buying it from the UK because I just have to own this film.
Ps. It definitely features the best performances ever from Lea Thompson, Jeffrey Jones and especially Tim Robbins! Oscar-worthy stuff here.
