Review of Howard the Duck (1986) by Tico P — 03 Jan 2011
Hard to know what everyone involved in this was actually thinking. I know its based on a comic and I'm not begrudging the concept in its perfect eighties-ness, hell, I'm actually glad it exists in all its mistimed glory.
But its clear that it was an attempt at something big which never quite took off. Any time you are trying to pass off a film where the notion of inter-species relations are touched upon when a duck sleeps alongside a very scantily clad Lea Thompson you are on thin ice.
There are some interesting moments, Tim Robbins for example, Lea Thompson is foxy as hell AND she sings, and the logistics behind the animatronic duck Howard are complicated and as such deserve some respect.
In a weird way, I love this film more than I love many others of greater quality....I guess, its because it was trying to achieve something so ridiculous that in its own way...its amazing.
