Review of Howard the Duck (1986) by Patrick A — 22 Nov 2009
This film is tough to rate-- it's pretty terrible and ridiculous and riddled with cliches. But as long as you go into it expecting this (as I did), it can be a fun trip. I mean there's weird like Bladerunner or Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, that's weird yet acknowledged to be great cinema.
And then there's weird like Howard the Duck, which is "is this really happening?" weird. It's so bad it's good. It's so 80's. It's so disturbing to watch near-sex scenes between human and duck.
Lea Thompson is cute, in a vacuous, hairspray-saturated way, and Jefferey Jones and Tim Robbins-- whose careers would later be led astray by such forgettable films as "The Crucible," "Shawshank Redemption," and "Mystic River," throw themselves into the loving embrace of the cheese.
