Review of How to Train Your Dragon (2010) by Trentyn P — 21 Feb 2015
This is the best 3-D I've ever experienced in theaters and that's where this movie was meant to be experienced.
Everything from the booming score to the epic scale final sequence demands complete immersion. It's hard not to have the experience of this movie diluted if you're distracted in any way. The pacing is badly inconsistent as well which causes issues with how the story flows and develops.
It, however, boasts beautiful animation, a classic story with a twist, and a beautiful developed movie world in Berk. Some of the voice acting is excellent, most of it even, but Jay Baruchel and America Ferrera as the leads feel like miscasts.
Still, How To Train Your Dragon is an enthralling experience that strikes the right emotional chords and tones. The score is just incredible and drives the action in such a big way.
This is in the upper echelon of animated family films, challenging some pixar films, which is a huge feat for the consistently inferior Dream Works. This is an animated movie that's not to be missed.
