Review of How to Train Your Dragon (2010) by Vasco M — 10 Jun 2015
How To Train Your Dragon is good. Really Good. The animation is excellent, the script smart, the characterisation evocative and......Toothless. This film is one of Dreamworks' best efforts. But, I must make this clear, this is neither as good as any pixar classic. And, yes, it's overrated.
Whilst everything is very commendable, nothing really feels as electrifyingly wondrous, especially the aesthetics, of Pixar or even Disney. That is, until Toothless comes into the plot. He basically elevates the film tenfold.
The most frustrating element concerning this movie is that its very predictable from the start that hiccup will tame the most dangerous dragon, blah, blah, blah. And, yes, the ending turns into a big action thing a' la Big Hero 6.
With all this criticism, that's not to say I don't enjoy this film. I thoroughly enjoy it. But there are flaws that creep in, in certain parts and restrain it from reaching just that little bit higher.
How To Train Your Dragon is a beautifully animated, adorably funny (Toothless!!!!!) and at times familiar viewing experience.
