Review of How to Train Your Dragon (2010) by Sherry L — 18 Jun 2014

A very fascinating and trancing movie from Dreamwork. The story is set in Island of Berk, up North, during the era of the vikings.

Hiccup is the son of the very macho village leader, but despite that Hiccup is the complete opposite of his father; skinny, weak, shy and awkward. Ignoring his son's not so very favorable attributes in the "sport", the father still makes his son, Hiccup join a dragon slaying class for youngsters.

Though the classes scares him almost to death, and he also makes a fool of himself in front of the girl he is in love with, Astrid, who is the best of the best in the class. Hiccup himself prefers to sketch, above anything.

One day when he is strolling in the woods he encounters the mystic dragon "Night Fury", which nobody has ever seen before, and is allegedly the most dangerous dragon of all.

A few seconds after realizing that Hiccup don't have the heart to kill the dragon, when sensing that the dragon was just as terrified as Hiccup himself, and what's more has a broken tail so he cannot fly.

So they become friends, and the dragon is given the name "Toothless".

Hiccup visits his dragon friend every day, feeds him, plays with him and trains him. No one must know about his dear friend, though. If anyone else in the village would know of it, Toothless would immediately be slain.

So Hiccup have to find a way to adjust his dragon's broken tail, which he succeeds with, and starts to learn to fly on Toothless's back.

During the dragon slaying classes, the once before so pitiful and wimpy Hiccup is now a natural talent as what it seems in mastering the dragons, never with any attempt to hurt them.

It seems like the old fact that dragons are dangerous doesn't prove to be completely true. But how can Hiccup show the rest of the people in the village that, and stop a tradition of slayings that's been going on for hundreds of years?

Once in a while, Dreamwork produce real gems as well!

The scene when the boy first encounters the dragon is nothing less than stunning.
