I'll be honest, I really wasn't expecting much from this, but it really did work. It was cute without being kitsch, formulaic but engaging, had strong themes without being to preachy, and was very well animated.
Most importantly, the characters were strong and believable, giving even the most ludicrous moments grounding. Quite a pleasant surprise.
