Review of How to Survive a Plague (2012) by Gwen G — 24 Feb 2013
This is a very good documentary. It is one of those documentaries that surprise me and astonish me at how they made it. This documentary, unlike most, has a beginning, middle, and an end. The few downsides I have is that the beginning scenes of the film are interesting, but didn't captivate me.
The second half of the film I think is where this film shines. After the second half you are invested and want to see what happens. I think you could only not enjoy this film if you are homophobic. Which brings me to my next point, you see a lot of the people that suffer from the virus who are gay.
I know that primarily back then it was viewed as an only gay disease, but I think it would have been interesting to see some straight people talk about living with the disease. This is not a downfall of the film, I just think it would have been a bit more interesting with that piece.
This is not what I think is the best documentary of the year, that goes to "The Invisible War" so far, but it is without a doubt very good.
