Review of How to Survive a Plague (2012) by Manny C — 28 Feb 2013
1987 was a long time ago, and yet not so long ago. That year saw activists joining forces to fight the AIDS epidemic facing a steep climb. It seemed an impossible fight, deepened by the indifference governments on all levels showed toward the crisis.
How could anyone hope to win? In the stirring, vital, Oscar-nominated documentary How To Survive a Plague, from journalist-turned-filmmaker David France gives a most remarkable answer, showing how members of ACT UP (AIDS Coalition To Unleash Power) melded the activist fervor of everyday individuals, trial lawyers and the anger of those affected to change the perception of the epidemic.
The result was igniting hope where there was only death. It's more than a movie, it's an inspiration.
