Review of How to Steal a Million (1966) by Nicolas K — 03 Aug 2011
This is the third movie by William Wyler starring the lovely Audrey Hepburn.
How to Steal a Million, is a wonderful lightweight comedy with Audrey Hepburn playing a french gamine, named Nicole whose father (played by Charles Boyer) is a professional art-forger. Nicole tries to convince her father to phase out his "business" before he gets caught. He already has some detective tailing him, and Nicole is very worried, specially about the fake Venus-statuette which is at the time put on a Parisian Museum with very high security.
One day, a gentleman thief (played by a very funny and charming Peter O'Toole) tries to steal one of the fake Van Gogh-paintings in their house. Nicole gets very anxious and first believes that he is a detective. When she realises that he isn't, she takes advantage of the situation and makes him plan a stealing with her..to steal the fake Venus...
So they make a waterproof plan to save Nicole's fathers honor and fortune.
This is an extremly entertaining and charming romantic comedy, all through. You don't have to be "into" classics to like it.
Hepburn and Wyler= dreamteam.
