Review of How to Marry a Millionaire (1953) by Stephen M — 18 Mar 2008
When it comes to the Marilyn Monroe bright and colourful comedies, most people prefer GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES and THE SEVEN YEAR ITCH. I am one of the few who actually likes HOW TO MARRY A MILLIONAIRE more. Don't get me wrong - I wouldn't give any Monroe movie the short sell; I just happen to go for this one. Maybe it is that it is set in New York and there are occasional scenes set against the city (I love seeing what Manhattan looked like in the past!); maybe it is because Lauren Bacall and Betty Grable are perfect playmates for Marilyn (all three women were very different types with very different styles of acting - all of them a confection); maybe it is that fabulous fashion show in the middle of the movie with those INSANE costumes! Maybe it is sexy Cameron Mitchell; Maybe it is funny Nunally Johnson.
Naw.
It's Marilyn Monroe bumping into things because she is too vain to put on her glasses!
