Review of How to Make an American Quilt (1995) by Alice I — 23 Nov 2009
(from The Watermark 10/13/95).
HOW TO MAKE AN AMERICAN QUILT (Winona Ryder, Ellen Burstyn, Ann Bancroft): Ryder is engaged to be married and she's getting cold feet. She decides to spend a summer with her grandmother (Burstyn) and her great-aunt (Bancroft) to finish her master?s thesis and contemplate her future. But Grandma thinks things are definite, and has gotten her quilting club together to make Ryder's wedding quilt. As the pieces of fabric take shape, the women talk of their loves past and loves lost. Will Ryder be able to find any positive aspects in the institution of marriage after these old gals tell their depressing tales in flashback? I recommend finding out for yourself. The third act of the film marvelously brings all the short stories, Ryder, and her quilt toward a touching resolution. This is a worthwhile one-hankie chick flick.
Queer Quotient: OK, OK, they?re all breeders, but don?t hold that against them. It actually reaffirms the bonds of women to each other. I still think most lesbigays will like it.
