Review of How to Lose Friends & Alienate People (2008) by Andrew I — 06 Aug 2011
Simon Pegg's big screen rise to fame baffles me. Aside from the obvious entries of Shaun of The Dead, and Hot Fuzz, his cinema career ranges from the crap to the unspectacular. How To Lose Friends and have a Ridiculously long title is sadly no different. The tale of a strange Brit's career with a fictitious New York fashionista magazine is neither hilarious nor boring. Had I bothered seeing The Devil Wears Prada I could probably say there is a comparison to be made there, but I didn't. How To Lose Friends... is more than a touch cliched however, the humour and story just seem...uninspired. Pegg is reasonable but struggles to seem genuinely rebellious, Megan Fox plays herself yet again, proving that she has a LONG way to go to be taken seriously, and Kirsten Dunst again plays that cute and somewhat intelligent outsider.
If you have a couple of hours to spend you can do far worse than see a random Simon Pegg movie, and at least it is better than that waste of celluloid that was Paul.
One more note to add though, did they have to do an almost identical church spoof to Tropic Thunder?
