Review of How to Be Single (2016) by Esther P — 16 Feb 2016
Hear me out. It has an all-star cast. I would give each cast-member their own star, because they've earned it in their own right. They're all very funny, in their own right, and do a good job of portraying their characters, however 2-dimensional the characters that they portray, are.
Seeing how there are increasingly good writers churning out both hilarious and heartfelt romantic comedies about the modern woman and her adventures to self-discovery, maturity, and independence "How to Be Single" doesn't really deliver on the philosophy of its title.
The movie focuses too much on merely the high energy party lifestyle of young singles hooking up in NYC and doesn't do self-discovery much justice. The writing, the story, the characters, the situations, all lack thought and depth.
It definitely will not lie on the shelves with, say, 27 Dresses, The Devil Wears Prada, Bridesmaids, or even Going the Distance, which, in my opinion, is a bit underrated. But, I do think this movie might appeal to the younger crowd because some of the characters' behaviors reflect the lifestyles of many current singles.
I did honestly appreciate the journey that Alice takes, it would have been nice for the movie-writers to explore that aspect on a deeper level.
