Review of How to Be Single (2016) by Steve W — 02 Mar 2016
You could a lot worse than How to Be Single. Its the cast that really shines and gives it their all, even if the plot is a bit uneven. Dakota Johnson has a long way from being a one night stand in The Social Network and Tom's girlfriend in The Five Year Engagement.
The actress has comedic chops, playing an awkward and shy character trying to find herself. Leslie Mann and Rebel Wilson back her up well, and the only things I didn't like was that Alison Brie is billed third but is only in the movie for 10-15 minutes tops, and could easily be excised without harming the story.
The soundtrack is also wildly uneven, churning out pop hits from 8 months ago, but doing wonders with Welcome to the Jungle and the Harlem Shake song. The movie has some laughs, and its main theme of actually being single to develop one's self remains intact, so this romcom/dramedy is alright.
