Review of How to Be Single (2016) by James R — 20 Nov 2017
It's kinda hard to rate rom-coms or "chick flicks." They're self aware of what they are and are in that strange middle ground of being super corny or super dramatic at times. How to Be Single is a pretty damn predictable film, but it has some heart to it.
The film centers around something like a main story an two sub stories that are going on during the events of the first one. We mainly follow Alice (Dakota Johnson), who by the way has way more personality in this film than all the 50 Shades movies combined.
Anywho Alice is recently single and moves out to New York to pursue a career in law. She ends up moving in with her older sister Meg (Leslie Mann) a doctor. Anywho, Alice meets the free spirited Robin (Rebel Wilson) who shows Alice how to have a good time and be single.
Alice continues on through many relationship, but realizes that she has to do whats best for her eventually. Onto the sub stories. Meg has a story where she's dating a younger guy, but also has decided to have a kid so she's pregnant aka drama! Then we have Lucy (Alison Brie) a helpless young lady looking for Mr.
Right. She keeps looking and looking not knowing exactly what she wants. Meanwhile a bartender named Tom (Anders Holm) slowly starts to realize he has feelings for her. So overall, the movie has some interconnecting plots and stories that make it somewhat more complex than a typical rom-com.
It has a decent pro feminist kind of vibe to it, but ultimately still falters and gets back into the same common rom-com tropes that are hard to escape in these kind of films. The movie just seems a bit too damn random.
Lucy's story is so out of right field and she really has no scenes with the other three leading ladies. Robin played by Rebel Wilson is basically the same character that Rebel Wilson plays in every movie.
Overall, it's a predictable film. There are some funny awkward moments, but truthfully it's not like a super laugh out loud movie. It's worth a rent if anything!
