Review of How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000) by Richard L — 31 Dec 2011
'How the Grinch Stole Christmas' is a live-action adaptation of the classic Dr. Seuss book directed by Ron Howard . This film stars Jim Carrey as the title character the Grinch. I often found that this film was far too mean-spirited.
The colors in the movie are, strangely, darkened which gives the movie a somewhat darkened tone to the feel of Whoville. The Whos themselves also seem to go through a drastic personality alteration from the book.
The Whos in this film are very often rude, competitive, and cruel to others as seen in such scenes as the Grinch's past and towards the end when the blame is being put on others of the presents being stolen.
The Whos in the book always knew what the Christmas spirit was, and they did not have to be told what the actual Christmas spirit is. I am sure Jim Carrey attempts his best behind all of that make-up, but the script was not well- written and often not humorous.
There are only a few humorous moments out of the entire film. There are, however, a few good things about the movie. I liked the sets that feel like they come from an actual Dr. Seuss book illustation.
I also enjoyed Jim Carrey's performance. The make-up used to transform Jim Carrey into the Grinch was also well-done. Overall, this film is too mean-spirited for me to enjoy as a Christmas movie. If you want to watch the Grinch's story in a better adaptation, just watch the animated feature of the same name featuring Boris Karloff.
