Review of How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000) by Jesse M — 06 Dec 2015
Jim Carrey absolutely saves this movie from bring abysmal. Visually the film is wonderful and captures the imagination of Seuss, but Carrey killed it as The Grinch. In fact he did so well that he easily overshadows how awful the Whos were done.
There was not a likable character among them. The whole community was made up of shallow and distasteful people. This is supposed to be about a hateful Grinch, but there was no contrast between him and the Whos.
Based on Grinch's back story, his hatred for everything Christmas and Whoish is justified due to the mean spirited nature of these whos. I had zero sympathy for their plight, and almost wanted The Grinch to succeed.
This is not how these characters should have been. I blame the intention of the writers and director Ron Howard who sacrificed thematic and story integrity for cheap laughs which never worked as far The Whoville was concerned.
It was Jim Carrey and his endless bag of comedic tricks and goodies that kept the film afloat and not even the technical wizardry could have saved this film without Carrey.
