Review of How She Move (2008) by Boikhutso K — 20 Apr 2008
I don't know if I need to write a review on dance movies anymore.
From now on, especially in the case of this film, this is all I'm going to need:
"Wow! What amazing (breakdancing/stepping/krumping/ballroom/ballet/fit throwing)! (Insert protagonists name here) is a young (man/woman/wombat) who's (upper/lower) class life is thrown into turmoil when they (endure personal trajedy/get forced from family/leave the grass hut for a better tribe) and find themself in the (opposite from previous class) underbelly, where the only way out is (dancing/drumming/eating the most hotdogs under a minute).
(protagonist) goes through hardship and heartbreak. Will they ever be able to (dance/battle/sing) their way to (freedom/respect/fortune)?".
How she move is exactly like every other dance movie you have seen since Dirty Dancing, just taken from the downright dirtiest angle possible. For once you actually feel like the lead is from the ghetto, not the quoteghettounquote. Everything is so gritty, so desperate.
I'd go on and on and tell you more about it, but it's not really worth it. It's good. I'm not giving it more than that. The dancing is mean but nothing new, the music is thumping but not revolutionary, the acting is passable for a change and the cinematography is excellent.
I think the thing that is most telling about the caliber of this movie is I missed the first 20 minutes and felt I hadn't missed a thing.
