Agreed on most/all reviewers' complaints, but I guess "what the heck is going on" might have been an intended plot of the movie (and maybe the title of "How it Ends" plays a plot-twist-like anti-climax to the "end" of the movie). Anyways, we got a taste of what the people in the movie were going through.
Also, as some mentioned, scenes turn into a kind of "apocalypse" mode (no people, everyone in survival mentality) even by day 1,2 of their journey.
