Review of How I Ended This Summer (2010) by Mike M — 30 Apr 2011
A slow, disturbing & very tense two-hander set around a Russian Arctic research station where two researchers are engaged in a slow, subtle battle of wits & physicality amidst the unforgiving climate & fauna.
The film is so slow & lingering that you can't help but search for the potential allegorical conceits-man vs his own nature, the struggle between masculine types, the passing of the old world & the rise of the new etc etc-and there's plenty here to discuss & contemplate, but it works just as well as a straight, bleak character piece with thriller flourishes.
Exceptionally impressive and worth seeking out.
