Review of How Green Was My Valley (1941) by Ann J — 03 Sep 2007
Okay, some people need to get over how it beat out Citizen Kane. Honestly, I would much rather watch this beautiful and heartwarming (yet heartbreaking) tale of Welsh miners than the superbly made but just not my type of movie Kane.
HGWMV has so many merits I don't understand how anyone could not like it. The cast shines, and Roddy McDowall's performance is a revelation - it is strong enough to be the center around which all the adult performances revolve.
There is so much heart and sadness here, but not overly sentimental or schmaltzy. I'm not sure who I would recommend it to - it's definitely not a fast paced movie - but definitely my favourite black and white film.
