Review of How Do You Know (2010) by Matthew O — 15 Apr 2011
There are plenty of quiet awkward moments that come in between would-be punchy dialogue, which would suggest that veteran writer-director James Brooks could have figured it out and punctuated the repartee long before the film's release.
As it stands, this gloss-fest has four major characters exchanging zingers as if each one's talking to a separate wall. Yes, it feels that uncomfortable at times and yet you really want to like this rom-com mainly because a) Reese Witherspoon is a lovely young actress, b) Paul Rudd shows fine comedic timing and C) Brooks has made a few great films in the past.
Final diagnosis, we know the film could have been much, much better. We also know that the film ain't half bad.
