Review of Housebound (2000) by Richard L — 15 Jun 2015
A pretty hilarious horror film from New Zealand that remembers to be scary. The protagonist is an unlikeable young woman sentenced to house arrest with the mother she ran away from. She's angry, awful to the people around her, and suppressing memories of strange occurrences in the house when she was growing up.
What is great about this movie is how it plays with the audience's expectations, taking unexpected turns to keep itself fresh and new despite certain elements that may at first remind viewers of other films. There are times when things become unexpectedly serious or hilarious in turn.
The actors are all great but many of the characters start out strange or unlikeable. It takes some time to start to see that the characters might be a little more appealing than first impressions. This is another smart way to make the movie unique and entertaining.
