Review of House on Haunted Hill (1999) by Brian B — 11 Jan 2009
Joel Silver's Dark Castle Entertainment production company seem to specialise in horror remakes, with Ghost Ship, 13 Ghosts and House of Wax on their less-than-illustrious CV. Their first film, back in 1999, was House on Haunted Hill; a trashy, flawed but ultimately fun horror.
Geoffrey Rush takes the Vincent Price role, as the theme park magnate who offers a group of strangers 1 million dollars to spend the night in the haunted house, a former mental institution with a storied and tragic history.
He hams it up sufficiently, and is supported by Famke Janssen as his less-than-adoring wife, and Taye Diggs, Ali Larter and Peter Gallagher as the guests. The film isn't particularly scary or life changing, but it does have some effective moments and some well-done physical effects.
Good trashy fun.
