Review of House on Haunted Hill (1999) by Andrew L — 13 Sep 2009
This movie makes me feel so very sad...because of all the potential it built up...and then let go at the very end. I can still remember how creeped out I was all thoughout the movie - from the very beginning with the riot at the asylum, to the disturbing images and hallucinations throughout the house - this movie had me scared.
And then, the ghost manifested itself...and in cgi form no less. And that was it. Horror film suicide right there. Still, a strong 2/3 of horror is better than no horror at all I guess...it's just so sad when I think about how good this movie could've been with a better ending.
I still feel that the first 2/3 of this movie are a great example of how NOT showing the "monster" is infinitely more effective than showing it.
