Review of House on Haunted Hill (1999) by Andy W — 11 Dec 2010
The beginning has energy, a sense of humor, and geoffrey rush's admirable vincent price channeling. the last half of the movie just sucks. the acting goes from good to mediocre (rush) bad to worse (diggs, larter, kattan) and the plot and scare mechanics proceed without any logic or suspense.
the cgi fucking sucks too. that black mist shit? what is that? and how does that have to do with the mad doctor? basically, a gorier The Haunting where all scares are absurd, lazily plotted, and visually haphazard because they can be justified as "the house getting pissed.
" ultimately, there is no story, there are no characters, and the dialogue would be wiseau-laughable were the pain the actors go through reciting it not so highly apparent.
