Review of House on Haunted Hill (1959) by Al M — 05 Oct 2010
William Castle's most famous and least gimmicky film, House on Haunted Hill is a delightfully campy haunted house film that surprisingly predates Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House and Robert Wise's classic film adaptation of the novel.
House on Haunted Hill is never as serious or psychologically complex as either of those works, and it proves to be more of a cheesy Hitchcockian thriller than an actual supernatural horror film. Never really creepy according to today's standards, Castle's film stands as a testament to a bygone era of horror filmmaking.
House on Haunted HIll will most likely make you laugh more than it will make you shudder, but it will also no doubt delight fans of old horror cinema with its pits of acid, dancing skeletons, hanged wives, and.
..of course...Vincent Price.
