Review of House of Wax (2005) by Jayme S — 28 May 2013
I enjoyed House of Wax for the most part, but the film buries itself in countless horror tropes to keep its premise from completely taking off. The acting is very on and off in quality, the cast are at there best when there trying to be scared, but when there trying to be casual it's cheesy as hell.
What made House of Wax stick out for me is it's great practical effects and sets, which lead to some pretty chilling scenes throughout. The film really shines when there in the Wax Museum, it's damn creepy.
There are plenty of other scenes with this chilling quality too. It is a shame that the film does follow so many tropes because it really could of been one of the better horror films in this generation.
I'd like too add that watching Paris Hilton get impaled in the face with a crowbar was just brilliant.
