I think this is a horror movie where it's concept is far more horrifying and scary than the actual film is. The concept is disturbing, twisted, and lots of things any horror fan would love. But at the same time, it is a very typical slasher film.
I love horror films, but the slasher genre is my least favorite of the horror sub-genres. It takes a lot for me to love a slasher film. With that said, I still feel that "House of Wax" is a good slasher film.
It has some moments, visuals, and concepts that go a little beyond the average slasher film, but at the same time, a lot of it is formulaic and typical of the genre.
